The Oystercatcher Trail - It's a love affair with Nature.
Marvel at how the African Black Oystercatcher survives... Eat wild oysters straight from the sea... This is an exciting adventure!
The Oystercatcher Coastal Hiking Trail is a fabulous eco-adventure. Rated as one of the top slack packing trails in the world, we provide guides to take you on short walks with beach lunches. Guests can either opt for morning walks, or full days' walks
The trail itself can be presented with a few physical challenges. The trail consists of five days, four nights of guided coastal walking on the beach, along the rocks and through some fynbos. Here is what you can expect from the trail day-by-day:
Day 1 Everyone arrives in Mossel Bay and will enjoy some dinner and sundowners with a member of the Oystercatcher Trail team and will have a good night’s rest before the walking begins.
Day 2 starts from Mossel Bay to Dana Bay. The walk for the day consists of mostly cliff paths and amazing views! The distance is 15km. The guide will meet guests at their accommodation in the morning and will arrange their luggage for collection by a road transport service. A breakfast will be enjoyed at a local restaurant and all guests will receive their Oystercatcher Trail water bottle and lunch pack for the day.
The actual start of the Oystercatcher Trail will be a walk to St. Blaize Cave with a guide. Guests will then meander and explore along the cliffs and contour paths and will stop at lunch time for a picnic. The guests will then end up in Boggomsbaai at Sandpiper Guest Cottages where dinner will be served and will spend the night in Boggomsbaai.
Day 3 will be from Dana Bay to Boggomsbaai. The walk for the day is mostly beachy and is 12km. Breakfast will be served at our cottages. The day will consist of walking along the beach with frequent sightings of dolphins and (between May and October), the migratory southern right whales that come here to mate and calve. Visit ancient Khoi San middens in the dunes, and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Welcome snacks will be enjoyed at Sandpiper Cottages and guests can experience an afternoon of leisure by either indulging in a pampering massage at Sandpiper Spa (but this is an optional extra - please arrange it with us before your trail begins) or guests could play a game on the Sandpiper Sports Centre’s tennis court or glass back squash court, or enjoy a bit of chill time on the deck. Dinner will be served at Sandpiper Cottages with an overnight stay.
Day 4 will be from Boggomsbaai to Gourits River. The walk for the day consists of beaches and rocky shores and is 21km. Breakfast will be served at Sandpiper Cottages and then the walk will commence along the beach and rocky shore to Fransmanshoek - a small nature reserve with abundant bird life and beautiful veld flowers. Enjoy a beach lunch, and snorkeling and swimming in the secluded bay.
Walk to Kanon Private Nature Reserve (about 3 km east of the Gourits River Mouth), which protects one of the few remaining patches of Gourits Coastal Dune Thicket. Visit ancient Khoi San fish traps and the giant dunes along the way - and if you’re fit enough, you might like to climb the dunes! Guests will continue walking to the Gourits River Mouth and will then cross the river by boat. The day will end with a Farewell dinner at the Sandpiper Sport Centre with an overnight stay at one of the cottages.
Day 5 will be the guests last lingering breakfast with the Oystercatcher Trail team. Breakfast will be served at Sandpiper Sports Centre and everyone will be transported back to Mossel Bay.
